Fantasy Earth Zero - Warrior by DrewGreen Fantasy Earth Zero - Warrior by DrewGreen
Hey folks!

This is my submission for DA's "Fantasy Earth Zero Character Fanart Contest." Basically, the goal was to design a fantasy character based on one of the game's three main character categories - Warrior, Scout, or Sorcerer.

I chose to design a warrior!

I decided on a chameleon motif, since I love folks with animal-inspired armor. He has a chameleon-head helmet, and his curly, tattered cape is supposed to sort of represent the tail. Obviously, there's a scale pattern to his shirt, as well.

Weapon-wise, he has two small swords for close-quarters combat and a large one for those extra-special emergencies. I'm sure he could probably stab you with his helmet, if he's feeling extra creative that day.

I don't know if my entry stands a chance...it's hard to say, since I don't draw in an anime style and the design is a little unconventional. Perhaps it's too themed? But you know, I thought I'd give it a try because a) I felt like drawing a cool fantasy character (and if I don't place, at least I have a character to use for the future) and b) I wouldn't mind a new tablet. ;D

Anyway, tell me what you think!

Adobe Illustrator CS. Sketched in Photoshop CS.

This image is (c) me, Andrew "Drew" Green, and is not for use by anyone except those associated with the contest, for contest purposes. Please respect my wishes as the creator of this image.

This reminds me so much of the character in the Disney Movie "Mulan".
I think they resemble each other. :D

Thanks! Unfortunately, the contest is over and although I did place as one of the 25 semi-finalists, I was not one of the top three to win. But that's okay, I still like the image!

lol, this does stick out a bit from the other finalists. But man, I gotta say, how refreshing, seeing a nice original style mixed in with all the over the top shiny crazy dragon stuff.
Great job and congratz, you earned it!

lolz nice work! people are really stupid man. like really stupid to hate on this. Its so well thought out and developing your own style is like..a major challenge (one i have yet to concure) Some people dont understand that or dont want to even attempt that so they just stick to things like anime. its nice how much your piece stands out compared to eventhing else. it doesnt make it automatically better just cuz it stands out but its refreshing to see.

The mute colors look very nice. more coloring i think would ruin the effect it has. also MAJOR POINTS FOR USING ILLUSTRATOR!! Thats a hard program man D8> Major respect.

Thank you very much! I'm definitely glad I scaled things back for the color palette. And yes, Illustrator is difficult to learn but it's so rewarding once you figure it out! ;D

Oh now that is just unpleasant. What gives people the nerve to be so rude? What did FS6 ever do to you, seriously. Did he pants you? Give you a wedgie? Say one too many yo-mama jokes? Seriously. Please stop being rude.

Thanks for your time.

Haha, you're just absolutely hilarious, aren't you?! Wait, I'm guessing that since you haven't gotten basic grammar down, you probably don't understand the concept of irony, either. My mistake.

Get some manners. People will like you for it.

I think what a lot of people are missing is that creating the character design, choosing which colors should go where, and designing clothes (texture, details, etc.) take up a long time of the drawing process.
If people just clapped their hands and had a perfect character in their heads, then I'm sure it'd take them less than half the time to draw the character out.
Anyways, I reallllly love the colors :D
The red ball at the end of the sword really stand out :3

Thank you so much! Yeah, I think many people fail to see that a great piece doesn't simply create itself. It's not magic, and there isn't a "create artwork" button in Photoshop that just does it for you.

YES, YES THANK YOU.

People just don't know how hard getting those crisp, smooth lines on a canvas man! I mean, just look at those lines, both uniform and varying. It's really very impressive.

I do think yours sticks out, not “like a sore thumb”, but rather because it is different from the others. To me that is a good thing. I’m not suggesting that the other images are inferior in any way, shape or form. I’m simply suggesting that your style is refreshingly different. The *only people you have to explain yourself to are the judges. They selected your piece because they feel it is appropriate to the contest and they are right. That is it.

The thing that bothers me most in this situation is that you feel the need to defend yourself and your art. The beauty of DA (to me) is that anyone can join, regardless of his or her skill level. I love that I can share my work and be inspired and learn from others. I also hope that I can share tips and techniques of my own. I feel it is this asset that is also one of the drawbacks.

I think one of the most under developed skills on DA is the ability to critique. I believe this is due to many causes including the limitations of cold text, writing skill, language barriers and unfortunately, simple lack of manners. I read one comment that said something to the effect of you needing to get used to receiving critiques; which I feel is true for any artist; but conversely, every artist needs to learn how to deliver a critique in an appropriate manner that elicits a discussion rather than simply points out flaws.

Your piece belongs in the top 25 because the judges saw the strength of character and design. It is the design elements (the chameleon motif, the expression, the color scheme, the scar, expression and tattoos) that caught their eye, not the medium and certainly not the perceived time you spent on executing your design.

Congratulations! I hope that as time passes, you can be proud of the fact that you made it to the top 25 rather than put off by the reaction of a few individuals.

I would just like to say that, I read your journal, got mad and put my war face on - came over here to flame some trolls but... They have already been burnt all crispy like by some top troll slayers. ^_^"

I believe that who ever is giving you a hard time are just sore from the fact that 1. Your design can work both ways, it can be badass and/or kind of cutesy! 2. IT'S DONE IN ILLUSTRATOR! Illustrator is alien to me, so I'm in awe that you can create something like this in that program :) 3. It sticks out from the rest for a good reason - we all need a bit of variety in life.

I wish you all the luck I could offer, and I really hope you win, or come close to it! You're style is crisp and the colours are just... It's all awesome :)

omg illustrator XDD I had to use it for class once and I found it really difficult to use because everything I did made a new layer. LOOL
I think your design is very unique like the other entries. I love your style because it is simple and original. I always enjoyed your clean linework and vibrant colouring! I'm really happy you made it to the semi-finalist! :D Congrats!

I really hate how people nowadays just judge everything based on realistic looks and graphics=AWESOME and cartoon=kiddy/lame/immature. It's just like those people who complained about the new Zelda's graphics >__> Screw those people. Both styles can be amazing in their own way.

I think it's strange that people are raised on cartoons, which inherently have a simple style with rare exceptions, and then they grow up to disregard them entirely, as though a great cartoon style lacks depth or thought. I dunno if it shows some sort of arrested development on my part, but I personally think it's the most interesting and fun way to portray the world (and things that don't even exist, of course).

But meh. Haters gonna hate, I suppose.

I'm glad you like the image! Illustrator is a nightmare to learn but once you get the hang of it, it's so awesome.

Ignore the mass of phlegm that's trying to make you feel less than deserving for being part of the semifinalists. You deserve it as much as anyone else did and this is an excellently done piece. Done in illustrator makes me go wow even more, it's one hell of a hard program to master so well. Well done and I hope you get what you deserve, a winning spot. :)
