Hellboy for mscorley by DrewGreen Hellboy for mscorley by DrewGreen
Hey there!

The second place winner of my "Cover of a Cover" contest, :iconmscorley:, won a free, colored sketch commission from me. He requested that I draw comic book character Hellboy for him.

It's strange that I've never drawn this character since I like him (both in personality and design) so much. I'm actually really happy with how this came out, and I hope that :iconmscorley: will be, too!

I hope you all like it, also!

Adobe Photoshop CS.

This image is (c) me, Andrew T. Green, and was created as a prize for M. S. Corley. Hellboy is (c) Mike Mignola/Darkhorse Comics. Please do not steal this image, or you'll go to...well, you know.

Totally awesome drawing, Drew. I love how effortlessly he seems to translate to your style (he does seem to be a very adaptable figure, Hellboy).

Anyway, very well done!

Looks pretty cool. Did you do those little sketchy marks by hand or was that a brush of some sort?

Hellboy's so cute with his cats. :XD: *wonders what you're drawing for me* ...hm..or are you not drawing something? Ahhh the suspense!

Yeah, the sketchy marks are all hand-done. It's surprisingly more theraputic than tedious.

And I'm still thinking of what to draw for you. I've already combed your gallery for ideas. ;D

Looks awesome :D I'd rate this much higher than a "sketch".

I really like the texture you used through the piece - the hatching. It adds a lot of depth.

Yeah, I agree that it's more than what I'd usually consider a sketch. But I loved the idea of drawing Hellboy so much (and it's an idea I had never thought of myself, shockingly) that I just had to take it to the next level.

It's a very good design of hellboy, you did a good job on texturing : the strokes on the shadow give a good volume feeling.

as a bad side, i would say i found strange the shadow under the nose, i don't see where it comes from, and it seems to be a second plain color of shadow which is not used in the rest of the design (only maybe a little on knees).

Thanks!

About the shadow under the nose: it's the very same color that's used for the cross-hatching effect in the rest of the shading, and that little bit of shading is just something that you'll find in all of my images. Sorry.

I think what really makes it obvious that this was done by you (since I don't remember seeing you colour like this before) is the stumpy little feet. I also happen to be a big Hellboy fan. It's my one thing where I can be a pompous nerd and say, "I don't like the movie because it's not like the comics."

Thanks! Yeah, I sort of experimented with the shading a bit, and I like the results.

I actually like the movies. I didn't know about Hellboy before the first film came out, so that kind of introduced me to the character. And I thought they were both fun movies (well, the second one was a little too light-hearted).

That's actually the reason I didn't like the fist one: wasn't light-hearted enough. I dunno, to me it just sort of missed all the points that I liked about the comics: the fact that it knew it was pretty pulpy and absurd, plus that whole folklore thing. Maybe I need to watch the film again.

See, being introduced to Hellboy through the first film means that I naturally would view the books a little bit differently than someone who has been reading them for much longer (like yourself). I was used to the darker tone of the first movie and so the second was so different, that it was harder for me to accept it. And let's be honest; the second film was pretty goofy at points, and I didn't think the plot was as strong.

Ja, where I read the more outright pulpy tone of the comics. I mean, they're quite dark and all, but they don't seem to ever take themselves too seriously. Mignola seems to realise that a story about a giant red demon fighting Nazis and folklore characters can only be so serious.

Plus I really hated how they made Liz a love interest in the film. But ah well.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure he has hoofs in the comic/film. The problem is, Mignola doesn't seem to like drawing Hellboy's entire bottom half so, despite the fact that I had a whole comic issue's worth of images to pull from, I had to make up a lot of the belt/pants.

I just looked up some other people's Hellboy pics (just to see what's floating around out there) and most people seem to have drawn him with hoof-toes. Oh well, I guess mine'll be that much different. XD

Hand-done!? That's very impressive! I thought the hatching was a vary creative addition to this image as well, but the fact that it was hand-done make it even more amazing!
