Vil Month - 16 - The Gromble by DrewGreen Vil Month - 16 - The Gromble by DrewGreen
Hello everyone!

Representing day # 16 of Villain Month, I give you The Gromble, made famous in the fantastic 90s Nicktoon, AAAH! Real Monsters!

While The Gromble may not technically be considered a villain, he does make the lives of Oblina, Ickus, and Krum (mind any spelling errors there) quite miserable. Your Grombleness is the headmaster of a scaring school for young monsters. He rules with an iron fist and sexy heels all at the same time.

In my opinion, The Gromble is one of the best characters ever to be seen in a cartoon. He's so memorably and strangely designed, well-written and consistent in character, and probably one of the most well-voiced characters, too. If you don't like The Gromble or the show he comes from, in fact, I feel really bad for you.

I hope you guys like it and that it brings back memories of a time when cartoons were actually funny! Let me know what you think, and I'll see you tomorrow with another icky villain to add to the list.

Adobe Photoshop CS, about 30 minutes total.

The Gromble is (c) Nickelodeon, this image is (c) me, Andrew Green.

I actually like Spongebob. It's got a lot of clever humor, and once you realize it relishes in the fact that it's annoying, it's really quit wonderful.

There are some other good shows, too. Although both "Chowder" and "The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack" were canceled in 2010, they are recent and fantastic. "Adventure Time" is really fun, and I've heard great things about "The Regular Show." "Sym-Bionic Titan" has quickly become one of my favorite cartoons of all time.

But of course, there were some fantastic cartoons in the 90s, too. ;D

Cheers to the 90s!

It's not the use of digital means to animate that bothers me (though some shows look lazily made, which is unfortunate), it's the general lack of creativity and youth that most cartoons lack nowadays. Nickelodeon treats kids like teenagers now, and Cartoon Network is going the same route. Makes me sad.

But you know, if you're looking for something really great, you should check out "Chowder" and "The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack", both on Cartoon Network and both very awesome, very funny, and very creative. I recommend them if you haven't already seen them!

Yes, I remember the orange VHS tapes! My family had some Rugrats and Ren & Stimpy on VHS, and it was hard to lose them due to their bright orange color. That was when Nickelodeon was still awesome.

Ren & Stimpy was actually not one that I liked, but my siblings loved it. I always thought it was too gross, which is funny considering I was a pretty gross kid. XD

yeah, same here. i was a gross kid. but i still loved ren and stimpy. the hairballs episode, where stimpy licks off all his hair, and has to go lick off a hairy guy's hair, always makes my mom get the dry heaves. my brother, sebastian, and i, we would always watch it just to laugh at my mom being all grossed out. good times....gooooooood times.

It was an awesome show, I agree. I always loved the little red gremlin
(forgot all their names xD). The black and white one was cute too. But
the one who always held his eyes up kind of scared me >.<

Nick has been invaded by teenagers and pop-culture :x

Ickis was the red guy, Oblina was the black and white one, and the one holding his eyes was Krum. I'll never forget those guys. ;D

I always thought Oblina's voice was so cool, but when she'd pull out all of her organs through her mouth, it always made me gross out.

I think Nickelodeon has lost touch with what makes children's entertainment fun. It's all about being trendy and cool nowadays, but that's not what we should be teaching kids! We're asking them to grow up too fast.

Seriously. Why, Nick, why???!!
I mean, the shows are so AWFUL and
CHEESY. The acting is lame, the
concepts are lame, everythings lame!

I am glad that i was a 90's kid =o

I think things went downhill when Rocket Power first came onto television. What a horrible show.

I still like Spongebob Squarepants, though. I find that show to be very funny. It helps that it originated in, like, 98 or 99.

Yeah i really hated Rocket Power. It was super annoying.

I still have faith in Spongebob. Although some episodes are kind of creepy...
One of my favorites is the one when Squidward turned handsome :lmao:

And don't worry, Nickelodeon is pretty much garbage nowadays. You really aren't missing much.

For some reason, Every time I see the Gromble I think of Tim Curry in Rocky Horror. But yeah, this guy definitely goes in the record-books for for having a well-done voice actor. The seamless transition between this weird sugary voice and spastic angry yelling is something many a voice actors wishes they could do.

It's the heels. definitely the heels. ;D

I don't know the actor's name who does the voice of the Gromble (though I know it wasn't Tim Currey), but yes, he did an amazing job. Really one of the most distinctive performances in a cartoon ever, in my opinion.

OMG THIS IS SO AWESOME! I loved watching that show growing up and Gromble was always the best! At the time I didn't realize he was representing a transvestite of sorts. xD A young nieve child as I was. That just makes it more awesome and hilarious. Too bad the show doesn't have a box set. D:

The great thing about early/mid-90s cartoons is that many of them contain innuendos and references that are above the intended audience, so as we grow older we can still enjoy the shows for more than simply nostalgia. Aaahh!! Real Monsters is a great example of that, as is Rocko's Modern Life (another favorite of mine).

And I agree, a box set of this show would be gold for me. I'd buy it in a heartbeat!

I'm really glad you like the image!

I had a rebound phase, specifically for the word "boogers."

(You need to imagine this) A friend of mine with a very prominent Israeli accent would do funny but inaccurate impressions of Jean Chretien, punctuating his speeches with "...BOOGERS!"

Yes, I thought boogers were really funny, too. I couldn't watch Ren & Stimpy, though. That show was too gross for my liking, even at such a young age.
