Webcomic Advice?

Thu Oct 14, 2010, 9:23 AM
Hey guys,

So as you know, "The Quest for Love with Yoki Safari" will be born as a webcomic pretty soon (shooting for the end of the year, ASAP though).  And since I reckon some of you will be my readers (and because I don't know anything and I suck), I thought I'd ask you for advice on the subject.

First and foremost, does anyone know anything about ComicPress?  Any tips?

More broadly, what do you look for in a good webcomic website?  What are some dos and donts?  What kind of extra features do you like?

Anything else?

Seriously, any advice that isn't "OMG i lyk it whn u updat daly!!!!" will be helpful.  I appreciate your insight!

Also, as a quick note, I want to ask you guys to go visit my blog and bookmark/follow it if you like it!  I am sharing some concepts and sketches over there that won't be making their way over here, so it might interest you!  My blog is here:  [link]

Best,

~Drew

I helped set up and run :iconlittlekings" wencomic, Honey & the Whirlwind and comicpress is the way to go. if you ever have any issue, the people on their forum are mad helpful. Also using wordpress as a whole is fabulous.

the best comics to me are the ones that are consistent and have good design. My top favorites are probably Johnny Wanderer, Journalin, Hark a Vagrant, the meek, girls with slingshots & Bug. (oh and i secretly like oglaf, but mostly for the fountain of dobut series haha) A lot of those run on some comicpress or wordpress variant I think. I like when webcomic people write a journal or have secret alt text. also its important to put your website info on each comic. Other things i like: easy navigation- clicking the comic results in the next page. Having easy to access and read archives.

things that i hate: too many ads. one project wonderful slot is enough.

Thanks for the insight! The "Honey & the Whirlwind" website...is that comicpress?

How do you use comicpress? Is it something you apply on top of Wordpress or is it its own thing? Knowing where to start has been a big challenge for me, haha.

heheh ^__^

ok where to start.

Comicpress is a theme for Wordpress. In other words, you have to have wordpress installed, and the Comipress fits on top of it. Think of wordpress as the architectural plan and bare bones of a building. Comicpress (or any other wordpress theme) is like the molding, which gives a house a general style. Comic press child themes, are like when you decorate your house with fancy furnishings.

#1- web hosting that allows for php5
(I'm on 1&1.com and I had a lot of messing around to make it work for Honey & the Whirlwind.) The newest Wordpress and Comicpress run on php5.(It's not as scary as it sounds...lol) My recommendation for webhosting is Bluehost- it has unlimited bandwidth (so lots of people can go on your site and you are not ever charged for it) and also it has one click wordpress installation.

So-- say you have bluehost, then installing wordpress is a snap. If you have something else, this tutorial will probably help you out in the understanding: [link]

#2 After you install wordpress and are logged into your site (how to do that is go to the web address [link]), you install comic press into it. You don't even have to leave wordpress to do it necessarily. The comic press website has a bunch of tutorials and such about it. :D

#3 after you do all that, then you can start adding all extra things and mods- wordpress facilitates everything- you log in, and you can control posts, comments, upload your comic. and you can also mangae plugins (plugins do things like moderate spam, or add fancy avatar for comments, or 'follow me on twitter' things)

I get what you mean... it's always a lot of assuming you know something. it can be frustrating. i'm in aim in dashboardlanding so if i can ever give u a hand feel free to buggle me. i'm not an expert expert, but if i can help lemme know ^^

I really like it when the pages are very easy to turn, there was one comic where I could use the arrow keys to go through the pages and it made it so much easier and kept my flow of reading going.
Easy layout, fanart section, about section.

I like being able to fave the site once and not have to refave every update, so whenever I go to the site it will be the newest entry :) Most of the webcomics I read, I have to re fave them. I don't know how to make it that way though.

I think if you just fave the main site's URL instead of just a page of the comic on the site, it'll be the live/active part of the site that will show the latest update. That's what it has been in my experience.

Thanks for the input!

Typically if you click on the home page, the default page will be latest page, so fav it on the home page instead of the actual page update itself.
